NetAlly AirMagnet network tools

Learn about AirMagnet's network tools

NetAlly AirMagnet is a suite of software for planning, surveying and analyzing wireless networks. Each of the AirMagnet applications can be installed on a user's computer, and then (in conjunction with a USB network adapter) act as an ideal helper for any WiFi network installation and upgrade.

AirMagnet Planner

Chaotic WiFi network deployment planning can lead to overspending and inadequate service, resulting in end-user dissatisfaction. NetAlly AirMagnet Planner is a tool that saves time, money and eliminates frustration by taking into account building materials, obstacles, access point configurations, antenna patterns and many other variables when planning a wireless network. Using AirMagnet Planner will create a predictive map of WiFi signal and performance before the network or physical building is built.

802.11 modeling

With AirMagnet Planner, users can design new 802.11 networks, as well as plan migration strategies for existing legacy networks, including 1:1 replacements or phased deployment of devices in legacy networks. Users can plan their deployments in terms of number of users or capacity - without having to deploy physical access points.

AirMagnet Planner provides unique coverage maps for WLAN throughput and other technology-specific heat maps, such as signal coverage, modes of operation, MCS Transmit Rate, channel width and channel overlap. This makes it possible to estimate WLAN performance at each location. Because AirMagnet Planner is part of a single, seamless application with AirMagnet Survey PRO, users can verify "modeled" 802.11 results with "real-world active" surveys after deployment.

Automatic implementation of the building/floor plan (AWE)

Users can reduce the amount of time spent preparing the floor plan of the building where the wireless network is to be deployed. Quickly importing wall plans from CAD is done in just a few mouse clicks. Each CAD layer can be individually selected and given a unique attenuation type.

Advanced WLAN modeling

AirMagnet Planner makes it easy to create a detailed model of any wireless environment - even before network deployment or building construction. Simply load a location map and use the built-in library of walls, doors and windows to fine-tune the characteristics of the facility.

AirMagnet Planner allows users to add APs to any location and experiment to find the ideal placement for their environment based on their requirements. AirMagnet Planner also provides independent settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Users can set the AP channel, IP address, transmit power, antenna type, orientation, elevation and 802.11 specifications. Once the planning session is complete, users can generate a professional Bill of Materials report containing all the information they need to properly install the network. In addition to RF network coverage information, users can access performance metrics such as data rate and throughput.

Multi-story modeling

When users plan and design wireless access in multi-story buildings, it makes economic sense to reuse access point services - to reduce hardware deployment costs. With AirMagnet Planner's multi-floor planning capability, users can visualize coverage and performance heat maps in 2D and 3D across all floors, providing accurate insight into signal penetration to neighboring floors.

Users can visualize signal strength, data rate, operating mode, MCS transmission rate, channel width and channel overlap between floors and more.

AirMagnet Survey PRO

NetAlly AirMagnet Survey PRO enables network professionals to design, deploy and test Wi-Fi 6 networks for optimal performance, security and compliance. 802.11 field research

AirMagnet Survey is a wireless network deployment solution that enables users to measure, as well as evaluate the actual end-user experience of a wireless network, using any 802.11 card or AirMapper™ Site Survey on AirCheck™ G2 and EtherScope™ nXG devices.

AirMagnet Survey goes beyond simple RF coverage verification, plotting actual network performance for the end user in terms of throughput and PHY data rates, taking into account MIMO and other environmental situations/network configurations. The solution shows the coverage of specific 802.11 parameters that enhance performance, such as higher MCS schemes and wider channels, as well as where interference and legacy devices may affect performance. The end result is a complete Wi-Fi network "weather map" that includes all critical RF and end-user performance metrics. These "real-world" measurements allow IT staff to design and deploy a WLAN accurately from the start.

"Actual" field data and solving "what if" scenarios

With the AirMapper app on the AirCheck G2 or EtherScope nXG, users can quickly and easily collect location-based Wi-Fi measurements and create visual heat maps of key performance metrics in AirMagnet Survey PRO. The easy-to-use AirMapper app is ideal for quickly surveying new deployments, validating changes and verifying performance:

  • Faster and easier Wi-Fi network measurements with a completely mobile platform.
  • Enterprise-grade measurements without the need for a dongle or network-connected device.
  • Easily visualize and share survey data via Link-Live Cloud Service or AirMagnet Survey PRO.

AirMagnet Survey uses multiple adapters connected to the same computer to provide users with a solution for emulating real-world customer behavior - reducing survey time, effort and cutting costs in half, as users only need to walk the floor once to collect all the required data.

With this 802.11 wireless network test tool, users can create "what-if" scenarios to simulate various network changes and preview their impact. This includes changing the AP's transmit power, channel, SSID settings or adding ambient noise. Users can also simulate moving APs to new locations and preview the effect of adding more APs. AirMagnet Survey allows users an automated channel plan for APs to avoid interference and over-allocation.

Wireless field surveys

With a combination of GPS support and Google Earth integration, AirMagnet Survey PRO provides a clear path to fast, fully automated measurements of outdoor wireless networks. Users can use their NMEA-compatible GPS device to automatically collect data on external wireless networks. Users can import street maps of any city in the world, allowing them to analyze the results in the AirMagnet Survey user interface, or export them to Google Earth for a zoomed-in view of any street in the city.

Radio spectrum and Voice-over-WLAN research

Before making any design and implementation decisions, it is important to consider RF interference from non-Wi-Fi devices. Users who have the AirMagnet Spectrum XT can collect both Wi-Fi and spectrum analysis data in a single survey. With this integration, users can visualize RF energy at any location and identify and display the presence of non-Wi-Fi devices that interfere with WLAN.

AirMagnet Survey addresses the challenges that network installers and IT personnel face when deploying VoWLANs. It also gives them the ability to use a built-in voice call readiness verification system that allows users to ensure that their network design complies with the phone provider's recommendations and allows them to conduct voice call surveys under real-world conditions. With this unique testing capability, users can validate and chart the quality of phone calls to help identify and minimize problems.

Don't miss any traffic on your Wi-Fi network

AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer gives you the ability to capture any Wi-Fi traffic for 802.11 networks, including 3×3 802.11ac. As a result, any Wi-Fi issues can be resolved right off the bat, without costly rework or escalation.

Built-in wireless expertise

The AirWISE® engine automatically detects the root cause of dozens of wireless network problems across the spectrum. AirWISE® eliminates the need to manually interpret complex packet decodes and wireless network data, taking a proactive role in identifying and explaining more than hundreds of threats and performance issues before they affect the Wi-Fi network. AirWISE®'s user-friendly interface explains alerts in simple terms, provides access to additional diagnostic data and offers advice on corrective actions.

Comprehensive Wi-Fi interference detection and Wi-Fi network analysis

Interference is one of the main causes of poor connectivity and performance problems on the network. They can come from other Wi-Fi devices, poor channel scheduling (adjacent or co-channel interference), or from sources other than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi interference occurs as a result of co-channel/neighbor channel interference from a company's or neighboring WLAN, hidden nodes in the environment, or non-Wi-Fi devices operating in the 802.11 band. The AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer Interference Status Indicator lists the overall status of the anomaly for each Wi-Fi channel. It also provides a list of hidden nodes and non-Wi-Fi devices (non-Wi-Fi detection requires AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer PRO and AirMagnet Spectrum XT to be installed on the same machine) operating in the channel. This allows users to easily plan future Wi-Fi deployments or modify existing deployments to minimize interference and improve network performance.

Analysis of WLAN customer roaming

Ensuring seamless roaming between APs - without any interruptions to connections or sessions and in a way that is not noticeable to the user - is key to any deployment. AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer PRO leverages support for multiple WLAN adapters connected to a computer to solve client roaming issues - one of the most common problems reported by IT staffers involving WLANs.

AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer provides advanced details on all roaming transactions for each WLAN client. Users use AirWISE® knowledge to get detailed reasons why a roaming event occurred, device and channel parameters that affect roaming, and insights into roaming quality.

For VoWLAN phones, users can monitor voice latency and other statistics as the phone moves from one AP to another during a call. The app provides VoFi-specific data (such as WiMOS, Signal Strength, etc.) and packet transmission rates during a call.

AirMagnet Spectrum XT

Trying to pinpoint the source of Wi-Fi interference in a wireless network without the right tools becomes a game of "random." Automatic identification and localization of RF interference sources

AirMagnet Spectrum XT offers real-time detection and identification of non-Wi-Fi interference sources that degrade wireless network performance. The extensive list of device sources includes Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, microwave ovens, wireless game controllers, digital video converters, radar, motion detectors or ZigBee devices, among others.

Spectrum XT also provides detailed information about which interfering device is causing the most problems (with an additional Bluetooth adapter connected to the same computer, the analyzer provides ID, name, services, etc.).

With the built-in "device locator tool," users can locate any source of interference operating in the RF environment. Acting like a Geiger counter, the tool emits louder beeps as the user gets closer to locating the device.

Integration with AirMagnet Survey PRO

AirMagnet Survey PRO users using AirMagnet Spectrum XT on the same computer can conduct a spectrum survey at the same time as a passive or active site survey, reducing transition time. This information helps users plan channel settings for current and planned WLAN infrastructure. Users also receive a list of RF interference sources detected by the AirMagnet Spectrum XT as part of the AirMagnet Survey.

With this integration, spectrum analyzer users gain access to unique heat maps, within AirMagnet Survey, such as:

  • channel power heat map
  • heat map of interference power/location.
Integrated reporting

AirMagnet Spectrum XT's integrated report engine makes it easy to turn RF spectrum analysis sessions into professional reports. Customization features allow the Wi-Fi spectrum analyzer to generate reports on all information collected for the current environment. With the wireless spectrum analyzer, reports can be exported in Word, RTF, PDF or HTML formats.

Zero day response to any RF interference

AirMagnet Spectrum XT includes an automatic spectrum analysis feature that monitors the RF environment looking for unique and repeating interference patterns from unknown sources. Once a pattern of interest is detected and classified, users have the option to create a customized signature for future alerts.

This wireless spectrum analysis feature provides users with a "zero-day" response to any source of interference. This allows users to respond faster when troubleshooting performance issues on the network.
