Graphic tablets
Graphics tablets are pointing devices that are primarily used for creative work and design on a computer. They allow incredible precision in pen positioning, pressure level and tilt. They replicate the full range of work of the human hand becoming an essential tool for artists around the world, from illustrators and painters to animators and game developers to photographers and retouchers.
Such devices are also used in other environments. They are increasingly serving as an alternative to the classic mouse. The position in which the hand supports the pen seems to be much more natural and comfortable than with other pointing devices. The design and materials used in their manufacture facilitate grip and prevent slipping.
Tablets are divided into two basic groups:
tablets with an LCD screen (screen)
They take the form of a monitor displaying an image on an integrated screen with a touch surface. Its primary advantage is that we are looking directly at the element we are working on - the hand applying the changes.
pen tablets
They are a kind of pad, reading the absolute position of the pen. The main difference from a screen tablet is that you look at the monitor in front of you without seeing your hand and its movements.
Tablet derivative
Electronic notebooks are standalone devices that do not require connection to a computer, laptop or smartphone. They give us full freedom to work in the field. They allow us to write down ideas, texts, sketches, drawings, almost anywhere (on the road, on the train, on the bus or in a cafe). They are indispensable during presentations or lectures at business meetings. When we return home/work, we can transfer all the saved files to our computer (USB or Bluetooth) and continue editing. Electronic notebooks are very lightweight, handy and allow uninterrupted work for several hours without recharging.
ELEMENTS CHARACTERIZING THE TABLET
- Size
The size of the device and the size of the working area determine the characteristics of its operation - it is worth keeping this in mind when choosing a tablet. The larger it is, the more detailed the work on it will be. On the other hand, smaller sizes allow you to move around the screen much faster without tiring your hand. - Pens
The sophistication of the penwill determine the detail of the cursor position information. The best pens are capable of recognizing the angle of tilt, characterized by fast data transmission, so that the movements of the editor can be smooth and without a noticeable lag effect. If the pen tablet is to replace only the mouse, it is worth thinking about an economical but reliable solution.
- Function keys and circular menu
Two function keys on the pen corresponding to two mouse buttons are standard. When operating graphics/editing programs, the tablet must have several, or preferably a dozen, function keys to which you can assign keyboard shortcuts for a given program. In office applications this is not a "must have", but with the right configuration it can significantly increase the comfort of work. A very convenient solution is to equip the tablet with a circular menu that allows precise and smooth changes of selected parameters.
