Thanks to a wide range of devices operating via wireless LoRaWAN technology, it is possible to easily and affordably monitor key locations that are threatened by rising water levels: manholes, canals, rivers, etc. Thanks to the use of such a solution, we will be able to use a device that runs for many years on replaceable batteries to monitor water levels in a very accurate way and send a real-time alarm when a threat is detected.

The problem with water level monitoring

According to the Institute for Environmental Protection, in the last 20 years floods have accounted for 49 percent of all natural disasters worldwide. In Europe, extreme phenomena caused an average annual loss of 35 billion zlotys, and floods were the most common cause, as it accounted for as much as 51% of all disasters. Thus, it is very important to spot a crisis condition early and react quickly. Otherwise, property and human health and life may be at risk.

However, data on potentially problematic water levels at different locations are usually collected over a highly diverse and kilometer-spread area. Imagine that the unit responsible for monitoring water levels in a given area is located several kilometers from the measurement site. So how to safely and reliably transmit data from the measurement site to the monitoring site?

Data transfer technology

The answer is LoRaWAN technology, which is great for low-current long-distance data transmission. The range of data transmission via LoRaWAN is as much as 15 kilometers in open areas and several kilometers in urban environments. Combined with a standard runtime of about several years on replaceable batteries for each end device, this makes LoRa ideal for the deployments we describe.

The alternative system can also communicate using dedicated cellular technologies. In this case, you get a dedicated band to use, instead of using the 868 Mhz open band, as is the case with LoRaWAN. This can improve the signal in some applications, but forces you to work with one of the cellular operators.

Regardless of the communication technology chosen, the question remains what is the best solution dedicated to our application that will best collect water table data for us.

Measurement technology

There are many water level measurement technologies available on the market, each with its own pros and cons. At Stovaris, we offer devices with different measurement methods to make sure the device will work for your application. Below we describe devices with different technologies that will enable water level and other substance measurement in various applications:

EM400-UDL Ultrasonic Distance Sensor LoRaWAN/NB-IoT/LTE CAT. M

Milesight EM400 UDL

This device will provide a stable measurement of the distance to the water table in the ranges:

  • C050: 25 ~ 500cm
  • C100: 25 ~ 800cm
  • W050: 30 ~ 500cm
  • W100: 50 ~ 1000cm

How to mount LoRaWAN device on the ceiling

The dead spot depends on the probe, but is relatively small, which will enable the device to be used at least in wastewater monitoring.

Batteries: 2 x 9000 mAh ER26500 Li-SOCL2 providing 10 years of device operation

IP67

Mounting method on the ceiling with screws.

EM500-UDL Ultrasonic distance sensor/LoRaWAN level sensor

EM500UDL

The device is suitable for long-distance distance measurements, depending on the sensor:

  • C050: 25 ~ 500cm
  • C100: 25 ~ 1000cm
  • W050: 30 ~ 500cm
  • W100: 50 ~ 1000cm

Despite the long range, the sensor also provides a small blind spot. It is an excellent device for use in measuring levels in reservoirs, rivers, etc.

Batteries: 1 x 19000 mAh Li-SOCL2 (ER34615) providing 10 years of device operation

IP67

Multiple mounting methods: on DIN rail, wall, pole

Management platform

To enable simple deployment, the manufacturer provides tools for simple integration of the above solutions into the customer's existing platform. If the customer does not have its own platform, Milesight also provides the option to purchase their platform, from which data on connected devices can be downloaded in a simple and accessible way.

Measurement of water parameters

With the help of equipment from our offer , it is also possible to measure water parameters such as pH, flow rate, temperature, salinity and much more.

Cooperation with Stovaris

As a value-added distributor , Stovaris is able to help customers with the implementation of the above solutions and the selection of the right equipment and platform for the application. We also provide design pricing and support at every stage of implementation.
