LoRaWAN was developed on the basis of LoRa(Long Range) - it is one of the efficient wireless communication systems, with a considerable range and reduced power consumption, which can transmit small amounts of data over long distances. These two key features make lorawan an attractive solution for use in IoT devices.

LoRaWAN - what is it?
LoRaWAN(Long Range Wide Area Network) is a protocol that is based on the modulation of the LoRa system developed by the company Semtech Corporation (owner of 5G private network manufacturer Sierra Wireless ). It is a software layer that determines how devices use the equipment, that is, when they transmit data and in what format.
LoRaWAN Features
The most important features of LoRaWAN are long range in communication and relatively low power consumption. These properties make LoRa systems ideal solutions for industrial and urban IoT applications. In addition, they make it possible to overcome many of the new challenges that exist in rural and urban areas, such as those related to pollution, global warming or natural disasters that occur, with near real-time measurements of environmental data, for example.
Another important feature of LoRa technology is its openness. The user has many choices on how he wants to deploy this system in his infrastructure, the network can be completely owned by the customer, allowing no fixed costs and the highest level of security, but the customer will be burdened with servicing the devices himself. It is also possible to build such a network in a subscription model, using the tools of a specific manufacturer or a dedicated solution from one of the implementation companies.
What is also important is that all lora-wan devices are able to communicate with each other. If we have devices from two different manufacturers, all we need is to download the appropriate decoder provided by the manufacturer and upload it to our Network Server. This allows any mixing of equipment developed by hundreds of manufacturers.

Application of LoRaWAN systems
Because of its simplicity, LoRaWAN is widely used in transportation, agriculture and manufacturing. It is the best solution for industrial applications that transmit small amounts of data at low speeds. Data can be transmitted over a much longer distance than with other wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This makes devices using LoRa ideal for transmitting sensor data, in low-power modes.
LoRaWAN technology and the systems using it are suitable for applications that require monitoring of operating parameters, using a variety of specialized sensors. LoRaWAN network architecture
A LoRaWAN network consists of several components:

Gateways - Devices responsible for communication with end devices. Network Server - The server provides downlink traffic control based on RF information and provides an uplink interface to the network application layer, providing users with visibility into their data and enabling them to make appropriate decisions. The server provides scalability, security and reliable data routing. It can be erected in the cloud or on customer infrastructure, or even be embedded in the LoRaWAN gateway itself. Operation of the lora gate
Communication takes place over an open radio frequency (Within the European Union it is 868Mhz), using a small amount of bandwidth. The maximum frame size transmitted via LoRe is 243 bytes, which is, however, completely sufficient for data packets supported by this technology. The transmission speed, on the other hand, is higher than in competing technologies: for example, Sigfox.

What kind of range do LoRaWAN gateways have?
The coverage area of a LoRaWAN gateway depends on various factors, such as its output power, antenna gain and environmental conditions. Typically, a LoRaWAN gateway can cover 3 to 20 kilometers in open space.
However, in urban environments or areas with obstacles, coverage may decrease. It is necessary to conduct a site survey to determine the optimal placement of gates for the desired range.

How many LoRaWAN gateways are needed to build a network?
Determining the number of gates depends on factors such as coverage requirements, equipment density and environmental conditions. Conducting a site survey and taking into account factors such as topography, buildings and obstacles helps plan gate placement.
LoRa network planning tools are available to simulate coverage and estimate the number of gateways needed based on specific project requirements.
LoRaWAN goal swarms
The Gateway Fleet function allows us to create so-called swarms or fleets from LoRaWAN gateways. Thanks to this application, we will be able to connect several agent gateways to a controller gateway, thus creating an extensive network capable of covering a large area and dead spots of the network. All this connected to a single controller gateway on which, for example, there can be a network server aggregating the data collected from the agent gateways.

Localization using LoRaWAN
The technology is ideal for transmitting a signal about a device's location. GNSS/GPS-equipped devices will be able to transmit data to the Internet about their location without going through often expensive cellular networks.
With the help of several LoRaWAN gateways, we are even able to determine the location of the device that is sending signals to them, by counting the "time in the air" of the data packet sent by the device and comparing the result with other LoRa gateways.
All these features make it an excellent and low-cost technology that can also be used in conjunction with Bluetooth locators to determine the location of a device very accurately.

How many sensors can be connected to one LoRaWAN gateway?
The number of devices that can be connected to a LoRaWAN gateway is influenced by factors such as network architecture, data rate and device density.
Typically, a single gateway can support thousands or even tens of thousands of devices, but the exact capacity depends on the specific deployment scenario. Proper network planning, taking into account factors such as duty cycle, is crucial to ensure optimal device connectivity.
Public LoRaWAN networks
By using public networks like Helium, we will be able to connect our LoRaWAN device to the Internet without using our own gateway. This is an ideal solution for anyone who cares about getting a connection to their device, but doesn't want to build and take care of the network themselves. Public LoRaWAN networks are also becoming more widespread in Poland and will soon be available most likely even in smaller cities.
