KIOXIA Europe GmbH recently unveiled its second-generation SSD with PCIe 5.0 technology interface. The new KIOXIA CD8 Series NVMe data center SSDs are optimized for workloads in hyperscale data centers and enterprise servers and use PCIe 5.0 interface technology, which doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 - from 16 gigatransfers per second (GT/s) to 32GT/s. The CD8 series is already in consumer testing.
The CD8 series, based on KIOXIA's BiCS FLASH 3D 5gen flash memory technology, uses KIOXIA's own controller and customizable firmware. The drives fit into a 2.5-inch, 15mm-high enclosure.
The new drives are designed in accordance with PCIe 5.0, Open Compute Project (OCP) Datacenter NVMe SSD 2.0 and NVMe 1.4 specifications, and are well suited for applications that include high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, caching layer, commerce and financial analysis, among others.
"The PCI-e 5.0 standard in IT infrastructure should settle in for good from the beginning of next year. According to estimates, 'five' will stay a standard until 2025/2026, that is, until the release of PCI-e 6.0 technology. The CD8 series is ideal for those who want to integrate with the new interface as early as possible."
It is worth mentioning that:
- Both Intel (with its Xeon series) and AMD (with its EPYC series) are currently working with server hardware manufacturers on the release of new processors. The new EPYC, which AMD has named Genoa, will be based on the ZEN 4 architecture, and the manufacturer has announced its release for the second half of 2022 - from current information, the release date is likely to be met.
- Intel doesn't seem to be slowing down either - the company is currently working on the fourth generation of its processors, 4th Gen Xeon Scalable called Sapphire Rapids. The processors should hit the market in the second half of 2022.
- Both manufacturers will introduce a lot of new products, which will probably become frequently proposed solutions. Intel continues to be the most popular manufacturer of server processors - it produced more processors in December last year than AMD did in all of 2021.
