Descriptive (diagnostic) monitors
Compliance of the monitors with the Ministry of Health Regulation of 2017
A compact descriptive medical monitor is a device for presenting files according to the DICOM standard from a PACS system for medical image interpretation. Generally speaking, these are diagnostic monitors that reproduce the details of images from all kinds of diagnostic equipment in the most precise way possible. These are both monochrome and color medical monitors with matrices ranging from 1 MP to 5 MP, in single or dual monitor configurations, and 4 MP, 6 MP, 8 MP, 12 MP in single-panel configurations. In recent years, we see a trend of replacing monochrome monitors with color monitors, which allow the display of images from many different modalities, as well as replacing traditional dual-monitor stations, with a single medical monitor with large (equivalent) resolutions that guarantee the highest image quality according to the DICOM standard.
However, we would like to add that there are still many physicians who prefer to work on monochrome monitors, where the diagnosis is based on monochrome images specifically. What is the reason for this? Any color monitor can display a monochrome image. The problem is that all gray levels are obtained from "mixing" the three primary colors: green, red and blue. This carries with it a number of potential problems. The primary one is the dominance of one of the primary colors, so the gray is not neutral and this can irritate the doctor. A second problem can be the subtle "borders" of one of the primary colors along letters or dividing lines.
So, a huge advantage of monochrome monitors from the point of view of performing diagnostics is that the image they display is "clean" and accurately reproduced. It gives a sense of greater depth to the image. The grays are natural, with no discoloration or banding.
To meet these expectations, Jusha will continue to produce monochrome monitors: 2 MP, 3 MP and 5 MP, for years to come, while BARCO will produce 5 MP monitors.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
(according to Annex 1 to the Regulation)
POINT 3: "If the appendix refers to a monitor, it should also mean the active medical imaging area defined on a panel larger than the required size of the monitor."
POINT 4: "Factory pairing certificate is not required if two active imaging areas are defined on the same panel."
POINT 6: "The descriptive workstation must be equipped with a computer with a dedicated graphics card, supporting monitors, the number and minimum parameters of which are specified below. Each of the elements of image transmission and presentation (including the graphics card) must provide the ability to convey 1024 gray levels (10 bits) in the descriptive workstation."
This suggests the possibility of using, instead of a two-monitor station, a single monitor with an equivalent imaging area to two monitors.
Thus, if we use a single monitor with an equivalent imaging area to two monitors, pairing testimony is not required.
It is a precise requirement that not only the monitor, but also the entire descriptor station (its video path: graphics card, signal cables, software) has the ability to diagnose a 10-bit image/signal (1024 shades per color/gray levels).
ADDED: "Detailed conditions of the descriptive (diagnostic) room".
1) Monitor work surface illumination of no more than 15 lux.
2) The walls of the room should be finished with a dark, non-glossy surface; the clothing of those describing
must not contain reflective elements.
We draw your special attention to the requirement for periodic inspection of descriptive stations (at least once every 12 months), in terms of:
- Correctness of DICOM curve mapping (error of no more than 10%);
- unevenness of the screen backlight (error of no more than 15%);
- compatibility of maximum luminance between monitors (for workstations equipped with two or more monitors designed for simultaneous display of images (e.g.: for paired systems)): 5% for monitors for mammography, 10% for other monitors.
Realizing that descriptive monitors (entire descriptive stations) are a critical link in the diagnostic process, manufacturers equip monitors with a number of additional functions that automatically control and correct image parameters. This gives confidence in the correct performance of the diagnosis and relieves radiologists of the burden of performing the activities of ongoing inspection of the equipment. A medical monitor working in accordance with the DICOM standard allows the precise display of the image necessary for correct diagnosis, while ensuring compatibility with other devices.
The most important facilities used in the monitors are:
Integrated calibrator to calibrate the monitor according to DICOM Part 14 (also remotely by the system administrator). |
|
The use of panels with very high brightness reproducing a clear, sharp image with all the details. High-brightness panels also guarantee many years of service life. The standard warranty is 5 years, extendable up to 7 years.
Systems to ensure even backlighting of the screen to guarantee compliance with the unevenness error of less than 15%.
systems that stabilize the brightness of the screen, firstly immediately after it is turned on or after coming out of standby, and secondly during the long period of use between calibrations (once every 12 months). A very important element to guarantee the correctness of the displayed image at any "moment" of the radiologist's work. |
Mammography
Descriptive post:
- At least 2 monochrome monitors working vertically, in DICOM standard,
constituting a pair and having a pairing certificate issued by the manufacturer - minimum resolution: 5 megapixels
- minimum working screen diagonal: 50 cm
- minimum luminance: 500 cd/m2

Mammography diagnostics requires the most precise detail reproduction in terms of both screen resolution and image quality. That's why 5 MP/6 MP monitors in dual/multi-monitor systems and 12 MP monitors in single-monitor systems are used here. They are equipped with the latest and most advanced technological solutions constantly controlling image parameters with the highest possible accuracy. These monitors, therefore, can be used to describe all the examinations performed (multi-modality monitor).
There are traditional dual-monitor stations operating with monochrome monitors, as well as 5 MP (or 6 MP) color monitors. For single-monitor (combination) stations, only 12 MP color monitors are now available, as production of 10MP monitors has ended.

General radiology
Descriptive post:
- At least 2 monochrome monitors working vertically,
in DICOM standard,
constituting a pair and having a pairing certificate issued by the manufacturer - minimum resolution: 1.92 megapixels
- minimum, working diagonal of the screen or picture field: 47.5 cm
- minimum luminance: 400 cd/m2
- minimum contrast: 400/1
Due to the resolution of the monitor, i.e. the area of its imaging field, a noticeable trend is the use of 3 MP monitors instead of the allowed minimum 2 MP monitors in two-monitor stations. This trend also translates into (combined) single-monitor stations, where 6 MP monitors are used instead of 4 MP monitors. Some manufacturers of descriptive monitors, outright, have already abandoned the production of 2 MP and 4 MP monitors.
