Remote management of renewable energy production - IMCI Case Study

Comprehensive solution for enterprise-wide remote monitoring and management of critical infrastructure. Event and performance data collection, distribution, analysis and reporting to enable accurate management decisions and measurable return on investment. One of Europe's largest renewable energy companies has implemented a remote monitoring, control, configuration and management system. Read on to find out how the implementation went and what important changes IMCI's manufacturing solution helped make.
The task facing IMCI Technolgies
Situation of a European company looking to introduce remote management of renewable energy production
One of Europe's largest companies, producing energy from renewable sources and supplying heating, needed to implement a system that would allow remote monitoring, management, control, as well as configuration of various devices included in their infrastructure. Above all, the system had to operate in an efficient and secure manner. The company in question had branches whose locations were spread across multiple regions in the EU, and some of the branches could only be accessed by helicopter. The individual branches were engaged in the production of energy from various renewable sources, i.e.: water, wind, solar energy. The task therefore involved a large number of locations with a variety of equipment.
The goal of the company described was to simplify operational processes as much as possible - with many locations using older management systems that were not centrally or hierarchically integrated.
The company described was looking for a solution that worked with equipment from a variety of vendors to ensure seamless transmission of all necessary messages from all its locations and equipment types. Information about any problems requiring attention was to be sent to personnel regardless of where they might be.
In addition, many sites needed a solution that could operate in a wireless environment and still provide the same reliable and consistent data. In addition to these needs, all aggregated alarm data had to comply with the IEC104 industry standard protocol and would have to be translated into the management protocol language used by the company.
The solution proposed by IMCI
Implementing the Open-i package for remote monitoring
To meet these challenges, the company has implemented a system that provides advanced functionality, flexibility, seamless network communication and uses international standard IEC104 protocols.
The company chose IMCI and deployed the Open-i suite to remotely monitor, control, configure and manage equipment at any company location; including those that required reliable wireless communications. The IMCI platform works with any manufacturer's equipment and is able to provide the company with constant visibility of equipment at any location, from anywhere, at any time. By implementing the IMCI solution, the company gained a unified system offering visibility AND management for all locations.
In addition, IMCI has installed and integrated an SNMP to IEC104 converter to meet international protocol requirements for users of legacy systems. The IRiS ™ software sends SNMP traps via the IEC104 converter for transmission to legacy software, ensuring seamless communication of alarms and events across the network at any time and from anywhere.
The result of the actions taken by IMCI
Completing the task and introducing cost and time savings
The customer's decision to adopt a unified solution for remote monitoring, management and control has reduced the burden of using the many different types of network management systems that were originally deployed. Communications were simplified, productivity increased and costs decreased.
