Has there been a light at the tunnel? Component availability is slowly starting to improve? There has been a crisis in the chip market for many months. Manufacturers are waiting for long weeks for individual components, resulting in production constraints for many devices.
Until recently, the market position of a given manufacturer was determined primarily by price. However, this has changed in recent years, in which availability has begun to take on key importance. What used to be taken for granted - the ability to purchase and fast delivery of equipment - is now a factor on which the customer's choice depends.
Is there a chance for improvement?
TrendForce noted that the availability of certain components has improved markedly. This includes USB-C controllers, WiFi modules, or integrated power management chips. As a result, professional manufacturers of laptops, for example, have been able to premiere new models that will be available in 2022.
The key question becomes, "Does this solve the problem?" For the moment, we can say that to a very small extent. It is true that a few ICs have better availability. However, there is still a big problem with many components. Currently, manufacturers are waiting the longest for PCIe 3.0 controllers for SSDs, 4G modems and touch screens for mobile devices. That's why these industries, in the near future, may "flop" the hardest.
To avoid misunderstandings, it should be made clear that things are still bad. According to experts, the whole of 2022 and part of 2023 will be burdened by the semiconductor crisis. However, the first, albeit small, positive movements are already noticeable. This situation is to be welcomed, and we should hope for an improvement in the availability of other components.
