Operating room monitors

Modern operating rooms in hospitals

Each department of a hospital is a particularly important place - the various stages of patient diagnosis and treatment are carried out there - but the operating room has a key position in this process. We are now seeing a trend of modernization and modification of operating rooms from traditional/dedicated rooms for specific wards to hybrid rooms that can be used for a wide variety of interdisciplinary and conventional interventions. In such cases, operating rooms must be retrofitted with, among other things, visualization systems based on various types of monitors placed on the walls of the rooms, or on columns within the operating table. Similarly, the new operating rooms under construction are already mostly hybrid rooms.

The systems are built into the walls of the operating room or hung on the walls (in the case of inability to build in or excessive development costs). These systems come in single or multi-screen, large-diagonal systems.

  • For a single monitor and nurse station, the diagonals are 24" - 32", and for review stations, diagonals above 42" even up to 65". The images displayed on these monitors must be readable from a distance of several meters by a surgeon standing at the operating table.
  • In two- and three-monitor systems, we usually have one large-diagonal monitor visualizing images in DICOM mode as well, and a second smaller-diagonal monitor often with a touch panel that serves more of an auxiliary role. This monitor is usually used for quick and easy management of the displayed content by support staff on behalf of the surgeons. A possible third monitor may be used to display patient vital signs, time, temperature and humidity. These systems can also have an integrated keyboard and mouse. The consoles are connected to the hospital's RIS/HIS system and allow the display of any available patient data such as general information, previous examinations (including CT, MRI), endoscopic and microscopic images. The most common data transmission interfaces are 10GbE fiber, SDI, DP or HDMI.

The systems for direct visualization of the procedure/intervention in progress are monitors, or groups of monitors suspended on arms that allow them to be almost freely positioned within the operating table and faithfully reproduce high-resolution images for endoscopy or microsurgery. The monitors are of diagonal sizes usually in the range of 24" - 32", although installations with monitors larger up to 55" are known. The most commonly used resolutions are FullHD and 4K. In the case of monitors with FullHD resolution, data transfer is via S-Video, RGBS, D-Sub, DP, HDMI, DVI, 3G-SDI interfaces. 4K monitors use DP, DVI, HDMI and 3/12G-SDI. Of this group, Embitron's monitors are equipped with an additional socket that can power other devices placed on the arm. This reduces the necessary number of cables that need to be routed through the arm.

Minimally invasive and non-invasive surgery places new demands on manufacturers of medical equipment as well as on manufacturers of monitors on which images from these very devices are displayed, allowing the doctor to perform the procedure effectively and correctly.
