Projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in August 2021 indicate that the average global temperature could rise by more than 1.5 degrees as early as 2030. As a result, there will be weather phenomena more extreme than ever before, such as droughts, heat waves, torrential rains, floods, landslides and more.

All these developments are having an increasingly significant impact on electricity prices. More countries are introducing policies to limit the impact of rising energy prices on households and businesses. These policies include everything from cost-of-living subsidies to wholesale price regulation.

In such an environment, it is becoming increasingly important to rationally manage the electricity consumption of our enterprise. LoRaWAN® is the right LPWAN for this application. Why?

LoRaWAN® operates in the unlicensed radio band, enables bidirectional communication over long distances, and is implemented in a star-of-stars network architecture, in which end nodes are not tied to a specific gateway, but transmit data to multiple gateways within their range. LoRaWAN sensors run on batteries for up to 15 years, while the communication range of the devices is up to a dozen kilometers.

LoRaWAN CT101/103 smart meter for electricity consumption

It is a device that attaches non-invasively to cables to remotely measure AC current in amperes. The CT10X will allow analysis of energy consumption by reporting accumulated amp-hours, without the need to change the wiring on an existing circuit. The two versions of the device, 101 and 103, differ in their detection ranges: 100 and 300 Amps, which will help in selecting the device for specific customer needs.

The CT10x is designed to draw power directly from the circuit being measured, eliminating the limitations of batteries or connecting to mains power.

LoRaWAN gateways

The offer of cooperating manufacturers includes many solutions that will allow the collection of data from the above sensors over very long distances. These include equipment ranging from the simplest indoor gates to advanced outdoor solutions that can handle signals from entire neighborhoods with a single device.
