Opengear: Secure network with outside access

Opengear ADV 06.2021-2

Servicing network infrastructure, outside of the area of physical access to individual devices, is challenging. An additional complication is the frequent need to cut off the Internet, associated with changing some settings. When we carry out such operations remotely, we must take proper care of the security of the connection - an attack on our network is, after all, the last thing we want.

Secure and trouble-free configuration/service of our network is not fully possible unless we opt for out-of-band. An infrastructure designed in this way - unlike the in-band model - allows an alternative path to access network devices. In this way, the configuration of network elements becomes independent of the state of the Internet connection or LAN failure.

Openager - a market leader in innovative smart OOB management solutions - offers tools from the OM (Operations Manager) family providing products that ensure remote management of critical network infrastructure.

With WAN access problems, alternative connectivity methods such as cellular modem/PSTN come to the rescue. When the local network fails - out-of-band devices have service ports (Ethernet, USB or serial). Thus, the administrator will connect to the console independently of the local infrastructure, without the need for the Internet.

Out-of-band Opengear is also worth using when there is no outage. This will guarantee a high level of authorization and eliminate the risk of hacking attacks on network devices. When securing a network, it is crucial to separate administrative and reconfiguration activities into a separate channel.

Opengear as a safe solution

"The market leader in solutions that enable out-of-band management is Opengear. They are especially recommended for companies providing remote management services for their customers' infrastructure. Some models are also equipped with a cellular modem and a Failover to Cellular (F2C) function, which, in the event of a failure, guarantees that company employees can use this type of connectivity while administrators are fixing the fault."

We will connect from 4 to 48 console ports of devices from the server room to the IM7200 Infrastructure Manager - by fiber or twisted pair. Permissions and identification are checked using LLDP protocol. A PSTN and 4G modem will connect us to the device in case the local network loses Internet access.

At the network edge, the Resilience Gateway ACM7000-L will do just fine. The IoT gateway will connect us remotely to up to eight devices using cellular data transmission.

Opengear solutions also come with a very helpful feature. Smart OOB will check how our network equipment is working - in case of errors and potential failures, administrators will be notified by SMS or e-mail.

The Opengear IM7200 is a modern, intelligent solution that guarantees uninterrupted access to IT devices and efficient network management via serial and USB ports.
