In 2012, Western Digital acquired the HDD division from Hitachi (brand HGST) and their series of the world's least fail-safe drives - HGST Ultrastar. As of 2018, the enterprise HDD division is developed entirely by WD, the drives, meanwhile, are renamed from HGST Ultrastar to WD Ultrastar. As a result of this change, WD has decided to end the WD GOLD series of server drives.
